How can the function f(x,y) = (x[sup]2[/sup]+y[sup]2[/sup]-x[sup]3[/sup]*y[sup]3[/sup])/(x[sup]2[/sup]+y[sup]2[/sup]), where (x,y)<>(0,0) be defined at the orgin so that it becomes continous at all points of the xy-plane?

Ved å skifte til polare koordinater, dvs. la x=r*cosθ og y=r*sinθ, får vi at
lim[sub](x,y)->(0,0)[/sub] f(x,y)
= lim[sub](x,y)->(0,0)[/sub] 1 - x[sup]3[/sup]*y[sup]3[/sup]/ (x[sup]2[/sup] + y[sup]2[/sup])
= lim[sub]r->0[/sub] 1 - r[sup]6[/sup] cos[sup]3[/sup]θ sin[sup]3[/sup]θ / r[sup]2[/sup]
= 1 - lim[sub]r->0[/sub] r[sup]4[/sup] cos[sup]3[/sup]θ sin[sup]3[/sup]θ
= 1
ettersom │cos[sup]3[/sup]θ sin[sup]3[/sup]θ│ ≤ 1 for alle reelle verdier av θ .
Så ved å definere f(0,0)=1 (som altså er lim[sub](x,y)->(0,0)[/sub] f(x,y)), blir f kontinuerlig i hele xy-planet.
lim[sub](x,y)->(0,0)[/sub] f(x,y)
= lim[sub](x,y)->(0,0)[/sub] 1 - x[sup]3[/sup]*y[sup]3[/sup]/ (x[sup]2[/sup] + y[sup]2[/sup])
= lim[sub]r->0[/sub] 1 - r[sup]6[/sup] cos[sup]3[/sup]θ sin[sup]3[/sup]θ / r[sup]2[/sup]
= 1 - lim[sub]r->0[/sub] r[sup]4[/sup] cos[sup]3[/sup]θ sin[sup]3[/sup]θ
= 1
